History

The 3rd Harpenden Scout Group was founded in 1908, just one year after Scouting itself was started by Lord Baden-Powell following a camp with a small number of boys on Brownsea Island in the Solent. This makes us one of the oldest Scout Groups in the UK, and one of a very small number who have been continuously operating since our beginning.

We are lucky to have our own headquarters (“the hut”), based at the top of a small private lane between 34 and 36 Southdown Road, which sits on land bought by Harpenden District Scouts in 1931. Our grounds are the envy of all the other Scout groups in Harpenden as we have fantastic – private – outside space for games, activities and occasional overnight camping for the younger sections plus a campfire circle.

There is a good article on the history of our Scout Group on the Harpenden History website.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
