Beavers

Beavers

Beavers are young people, aged 6 to 8, who:

  • Master new skills and try new things
  • Have fun and go on adventures
  • Make friends
  • Are curious about the world around them
  • Help others and make a difference, on their own doorsteps and beyond

Every week, they gather in groups called Beaver Colonies to hop, skip and jump their way through lots of different games and activities – achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way.

Our Beaver Colony is led by a team of Beaver Scout Leaders and assistant leaders. There is sometimes additional support from Explorer Scouts (14 ½ to 18) who are doing the Duke of Edinburgh young leader’s scheme, or the Scouting Young Leaders scheme.

Beavers start in the term after they are 6 years old, and then move to our Cub pack in the term after they are 8. Sometimes we will hold the Beavers back an extra term so they can move with their friends, or if the cub pack is temporarily at capacity.

The Colony has between 18 and 24 Beavers, and the members are split into Lodges of 4-6 children. The Colony meets weekly on a Monday evening at the 3rd Scout HQ. We start at 6:00pm, and the evening usually ends at 7:00pm. Organised excursions and visits will obviously have varying start and finish times.

Beaver Scouts are the youngest section of the Scouting family. Their activities are based around making things, outdoor activities, playing games, going out on visits, investigating nature, listening to stories, learning how to be safe and most importantly, making new friends.

Within the Colony, we broadly follow the Scout Association’s programme for the Beaver Section. The programme consists of a range of activities, which we aim to cover when planning it using a variety of methods. In addition there are a very large number of badges and awards which Beavers can gain.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
